Extreme heat often results in the highest annual number of deaths among all weather-related disasters.

In most of the U.S., extreme heat is a long period (2 to 3 days) of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees.

IF YOU ARE UNDER AN EXTREME HEAT WAVE

Hazard Scope and Impact

Relation to the temperature ranges and relative humidity of the region determines the definition of extreme heat. Typically, a heat wave lasts two or more days.

Death and Injuries Impact

Dehydration; heat-related illnesses including sunburn, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke due to lack of sufficient indoor cooling from air conditioning (A/C) or outdoor over-exposure.

Effective Protective Action Timeframes

Before for community readiness, during for individuals. While knowledge and planning to be able to get to a cool location is important, the critical Protective Action is to be in a location with A/C for effective cooling.
